Salineras de Maras – Moray
Tour: Salineras de Maras – Moray
Experience the cultural richness of exploring the agricultural terraces of Moray, which, during the Inca period, served as a research center for studying crops. Then, visit the Salineras de Maras, where salt is harvested in a traditional manner.
ITINERARY
The tour begins with pick-up from your hotel between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. We will then start our journey northwest from the city of Cusco, passing through picturesque villages with beautiful landscapes.
The first stop will be the town of Maras, where you can view the snow-capped peaks of the Vilcanota mountain range, including the “El Chicón” and “La Verónica” snow-capped mountains.
Next, we will visit the Moray Archaeological Complex, a series of large terraces arranged concentrically in a giant hole. This site was used by the Incas for agricultural research.
Following that, we will visit the Salineras de Maras, which consist of about 2,000 small salt pools, each approximately 5 meters in area. These pools have been exploited since Inca times, through the colonial period, and continue to be worked by locals.
After our visit, we will return to the city of Cusco, arriving around 2:00 p.m.
